South Sea climate for northern Germany
Challenge
Paradise Island is the new attraction at HolstenTherme in Kaltenkirchen, around 20 kilometres north of Hamburg. On an area of approx. 2,000 m2, 300 wellness seekers will find a place to relax every day with two pools and a catering area with 60 seats. The water and room temperature is a tropical 32 °C. The air conditioning of a thermal spa is one of the most demanding challenges for air conditioning systems: each of the different areas – swimming area, catering, changing rooms, foyer – requires different conditions for humidity and temperature. The system must also be highly energy-efficient.
Solution
The operator of the HolstenTherme decided in favour of the individual AL-KO AT4 Air Handling Unit: three units ensure a feel-good climate and good air in the ParadiesInsel. An AT4, designed for an air volume of 6,000 m3/h for supply and exhaust air and in kitchen design in accordance with VDI 2052, supplies the catering area. Two filter stages in the supply air ensure a high level of hygiene when handling food. A grease trap filter in the extract air separates grease particles from the air before the main filter. The motor of the extract air fan is located in a ventilated enclosure outside the air volume flow in accordance with VDI 6022. A second AT4 is installed for the adjoining rooms; it moves an air volume of up to 11,000 m3/h. Both units are located inside the new building. An AT4 Complete installed outside (air volume 35,000 m3/h) keeps the bathing zone in the comfort zone. The swimming pool design includes a coated and sealed special heat exchanger (WRG), and the ventilation system is double powder-coated on the inside to protect against corrosion.
The intelligent heat recovery system and modern drive and control technology ensure high energy efficiency and economical operation of the entire system – key features of the AL-KO AT4 series.
